Our History

The Cheese On Bread Initiative (COBI) was inspired by the enduring legacy of our mother, Daphne Young, and grandmother, Gertrude Murrell. Their unwavering faith, indomitable spirits, and generosity not only shaped our lives but continue to live on in the stories we share with our children and grandchildren.

"To whom much is given, much is required," and "Do good, and good will attend you until you die." These words were their constant daily exhortations. We watched them embody these values every day, always willing to give and share from the little they had. Many times, we shared our meager meals and cramped one-roof home with a family in need. Our mother would literally go without to feed a stranger.

It truly took a village. Without the kindness and generosity of many in Nursery Lane and Four Roads, our journey into adulthood would have been far more difficult. The community’s support played a crucial role in our survival and growth.

There were people like Ms. Marshall, the local shopkeeper, who extended credit to struggling families, even when their balance remained unpaid. Without her generosity, many in the neighborhood would have gone to bed hungry, uncertain of where their next meal would come from. She was not only the bread but the cheese on our bread many times over.

Then there was Ms. Carter, who faithfully purchased school bus tickets week after week, even if she was still owed for the previous ones. Her kindness ensured that we could continue our education—an opportunity that was never guaranteed.

To our mother and grandmother, to these two women, and to all those in Nursery Lane and Four Roads who, in some way, gave us a piece of cheese—we offer our deepest gratitude. We owe you a debt we can never fully repay, and for that, we honor you with a heartfelt thank you.

Inspired by this legacy, COBI is committed to ensuring that Barbadian children have access to the educational opportunities they deserve. Just as our mother and grandmother were our guiding light, we strive to be the "cheese on bread" for the next generation—helping to provide the support, mentorship, and resources to help them thrive.
